Rich text in the script

Script lines and scene descriptions take bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, text color and highlight. Select some text to get the toolbar. Not every format survives every export.

Last updated Sep 12, 2026

Select text in a script line or a scene description and a small toolbar appears above it.

What is on the toolbar

  • Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, with the usual shortcuts: Cmd B, Cmd I, Cmd U and Cmd Shift X.
  • Text color opens a menu of nine text colors and nine highlight colors, plus a default for each.
  • Align left, Center, Align right appear on action and caption lines only. They move the whole line, not the selection.
  • Turn into element and Comment sit at the left. They are not formatting: one makes an element out of the selected words, the other starts a comment on them.

Formatting as you type

Close a pair of markers and the text converts in place.

  • **text** for bold
  • *text* for italic
  • _text_ for underline
  • ~~text~~ for strikethrough

There is no typed shortcut for color or highlight. Use the toolbar for those.

Where it works

Script lines of every kind (action, dialogue, caption, note, lyric) and scene descriptions. Scene titles, section titles, shot titles and shot properties are plain text.

What survives each export

  • Word (.docx): everything, color and highlight included.
  • Storyboard PDF and PPTX: everything, color and highlight included.
  • Screenplay PDF: bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. Color and highlight are dropped, because a screenplay prints black on white.
  • Final Draft (.fdx): bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. Color and highlight are dropped.
  • Fountain (.fountain): bold, italic, underline and strikethrough. Color, highlight and right alignment are dropped; Fountain has centered lines but no right-aligned ones.
  • Plain text (.txt): nothing. The words only.

In every case the words themselves survive. It is only the styling that is lost.
