Start a project from a script

Upload your script and StoryTribe turns it into a draft project: your scenes and shots exactly as written, plus the characters and places in it. The project stays a Draft until you open it or generate shots.

Your script comes in exactly as written. To have AI write a script from your idea instead, see Start a project from an idea with AI.

Step 1: upload the script

  1. Click + Create on Home, or Create in the sidebar. On a phone, tap Create in the bottom bar.
  2. If you belong to a workspace, choose where the project lives with Create in.
  3. Click + Upload script. Don't paste your script into the box on the Create page: AI rewrites anything typed there.
  4. Drop your file (.fdx, .fountain, .docx or .txt, one at a time), or paste the script into the window and click Review.

Step 2: review the script

  1. In Review script, check where the scenes and shots split. Click between lines to add or remove a split, and untick anything you want to leave out. Then click Import.
  2. If your script has labels like Camera: or Location:, Review properties opens. Match each one to a shot property or skip it, then click Confirm import.

Step 3: check the draft

  1. The project opens with a bar across the top. Give it a title, and set Aspect ratio (16:9, 1:1, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, or Custom on paid plans), Model and Style for the images.
  2. Your script is shown exactly as written. The Elements strip lists the characters who speak and the places from your scene headings. AI may add a few more, such as a character who doesn't speak or a key prop.
  3. The credit meter at the bottom shows what generating will cost against your balance.
  4. Generate shots creates an AI image for each shot and keeps going in the background while you work. If there are more than 10 shots, it generates the first 10. View project keeps the script and cast and opens the normal editor with empty shots for you to build.

About Draft projects

Until you click View project or Generate shots, the project is a Draft. It shows a Draft label in your project list, always reopens the draft, and can't be shared or published. Nothing is lost by leaving it as a draft.

Troubleshooting

  • "Unsupported file type." Only .fdx, .fountain, .docx and .txt files work. Export a PDF script to Word or text first, or paste its text.
  • Everything landed in one shot. The script has no scene headings (like INT. or EXT.), so it came in whole. Click ← Start over, upload it again, and click between lines in Review script to split it.
  • "Could not build your project. Please try again." Click + Upload script and import it again.
  • Not enough credits to generate. Generate shots opens the buy-credits dialog instead of generating. You can still choose View project and build shots by hand.
